Chapter 16

Shocking Revelation

I discretely look through the plain glass doors of the coffee shop, and I'm relieved to see Calvin sitting at a table. He spots me and waves me over.

“I’ll go throw this bag into the car,” I say to him as he opens the door coming over to greet me.

It reminds me of when we’d meet up after lectures in college. Oh, the good old days. He watches me walk over to Dora, and I place my uniform in the trunk. When I return to him he's standing outside the coffee shop and greets me with a smile on his face.

“Wow, I’ve only seen your car in the dark and hadn’t realized it’s bright yellow,” he laughs at my Dora.

“And?” I challenge him,

“And...and nothing, it’s just so you,” he stutters.

“She doesn’t go fast and furious," I tell him with no shame. "I must ask Ali to have a look at her, ‘cos I can hear some weird noise at the back.”

“Ali knows how to fix cars?” He asks sounding surprised.

Is this a wee bit of chauvinism shining through?

“Hell, yes she can. Ali's the best mechanic in town. I highly recommend her if you have a car,” I inform him. “Not that she’s short of customers, mind, she’s very popular.”

He nods his head smiling, and sort of looking as if he wants to say something, but thinks better of it.

“It’s been so warm lately, do you mind if we stay out here?” I ask him.

“So long as I can do the talking and you do the listening,” he says, intriguing my curiosity.

The waitress takes our order and we begin to relax. I’ve been looking forward to this coffee with Calvin, all day. I’m not telling him about Callum yet though. I’ve decided to wait and see if we develop a relationship first. Something inside me is holding back, and anyway now is not the time, so I tell myself.

He begins, “You know I said I dabble in lots of things. Well, I own a few large companies.”

“Oh! Good for you, Calvin, I knew you could make it. That’s very impressive.”

Our conversation is cut off when the coffee arrives. The waitress places one of the cups on the table. As she pulls her arm away, the table begins to rattle and coffee spills all over the table cloth. The waitress looks around with panic clear in her eyes.

Calvin looks at his cell phone. “Oh man!” He says, also looking worried. “I’ve got an app that alerts me for quakes. Come on let’s get outta here.”

As I stand up I miss a step as the ground trembles under my feet. Calvin's strong arms stop me from falling. My head is filled with car alarms bursting to life. The street fills with a cacophony of sounds, and people come running out of buildings.

My phone rings and I realize it will be my mom.

While I’m checking that all’s well at home, Calvin is walking me with one of his arms over my shoulder. I find it comforting and quite reassuring.
